QuestionMy fiance and I do not eat the healthiest. Since planning my wedding, I have gained 15+ pounds. I currently weigh 175 and would love to weigh 145-150. I need a diet that is specific to me because I am a picky eater. I do not eat seafood (except for tuna). No salads or condiments (except for salt and pepper). The only vegetables I eat are carrots and potatoes (mashed or baked). The only fruits I eat are apples, bananas, grapes and apple sauce. I love my grilled cheeses, macaroni and cheese, sweets (popcorn, candy, ice cream), chicken noodle soup, spaghetti and chicken. Please help me figure out a plan that works for me so I can look like a princess on my wedding day.
AnswerThe easiest way you will find to lose weight is a combination of portion control and physical activity. If you simply cut back on how much you eat, you will find you should lose weight without having to completely change what you eat. If you normally eat 2 grilled cheese, eat one. If you normally have a big bowl of ice cream, have a small bowl. Cutting portions will not be as healthy as if you were to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, but it decreases your calories without you having to change what you are eating. If you don't feel comfortable cutting portions or feel like you don't eat that much to begin with, you may want to leave a few bites of each food on your plate every time you eat. You shouldn't feel hungry or deprived, that's not your goal and you won't be successful that way. A good way to fill up when eating less is to drink a glass of water (or other calorie-free beverage) before each meal. Taking your time while eating will also help; the average American eats a meal in 10-15 minutes, but it takes 20 minutes for the brain to recognize you feel full, which means many people just eat till their food is gone instead of till they feel satisfied. Changing when you eat may also help. Being careful not to eat "mindlessly" while watching tv or because you are bored can help leave out calories. Physical activity also helps with weight loss if you do not want to change your eating habits. An exercise program would be great if you have the time and motivation. If you are lacking in either of those, increasing how much you walk each day is best: parking farther away in parking lots, using stairs, pacing when talking on the phone all add up quickly. You can buy a pedometer for a few dollars to see how much you already walk and set goals to walk more each day.
Good luck on your wedding planning and getting down to your desired weight. You seem motivated and I am sure you can be successful.
