QuestionI am looking for a diabetic diet for diabetic patients with cancer. I am a radiation therapist who has exhausted the American Diabetes Association and American Cancer websites for information. If you can help I would greatly appreciate the gesture.
AnswerDear Marie,
It looks like the only advice I can give, but here I'm talking about very fresh data, try supplementation with energy substrates other than glucose, like lactate or pyruvate. The matter is, research seems to indicate that in both diabetic and cancer patients, there's a metabolic stress or even failure due to exhausting or exhausted capacities of glycolysis, which make these patients similar to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients. Ketone bodies, lactate and pyruvate all are bypassing the compromised glycolytic metabolic pathway thus delivering the struggling body the so much needed energy.
I know you need more practical details. Oral ketone bodies are shown to improve the energy-deficient condition in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients but they are expensive and bulky. Lactate is also not cheap, plus, it is unstable. The best buy would be pyruvate. Our experiments (please see http://brainfuels.com/2009/12/not-only-ketone-bodies-on.html ) show that it improves functioning of neurons in the brain under the condition of metabolic stress, when glucose, though present, is unavailable due to enzymatic insufficiency.
