QuestionHello: I recently read an article on a science news website linking the consumption of berries to the activation of a housekeeping mechanism in the brain ( link: http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_ARTICLEMA...).I immediately recalled an earlier article about dairy milk's counterproductive effects on the polyphenols in berries.
I am 60,and would like to benefit from the healthful effects of consuming mixed berries. The problem is,I LOVE dairy skim milk.I would like to wean myself off dairy milk which I use in cereal and tea. What would you recommend as the tastiest milk substitute, especially for tea, which I enjoy after dinner? I have tried soy milk, and I detest it.
Thanks!
AnswerHello Michael!
Yes, there are other non-dairy milk options that you may want to explore. The first is nut milk. There are currently a variety of options on the market. However, the most common is almond milk which has the consistency of skim milk. Hazelnut milk is another popular nut milk that may go well with your tea. Whichever you choose you will reap the nutritional benefits of what all nut milks offer which is that they are a very good source of protein and calcium.
Now, if by chance you have allergies to nuts you may try rice milk. Note however, that the consistency and taste of rice milk may take a little getting used to. Finally, you might also try grain milk which is made from a variety of grains. At any rate, I would suggest that you try a variety of them to decide which flavor and texture best suits you.
