Hi,
For someone who is going through menopause and has estrogen dominance, what is the best way to improve the estrogen to progesterone ratio through diet?  What foods can help increase progesterone level?  Thanks.

Dear Sue,

Excess sugar and the elimination of essential fats lead to serious disturbances in both estrogen and progesterone levels as well as in their ratio -- while low carbohydrate diet high in "good" fats had good results in improving the ratio of these two female hormones. Also, there few but important foods that can help to maintain the balance. They are:

Plant Progesterone:

wild yam
sweet potato

Animal Progesterone:

egg yolks
dairy products

Foods rich in Vitamin B-6:

walnuts
whole grains
fortified cereals
soy milk
