gluten free diet

Question
hello Sarah. i'm 18. i have Leaky Gut Syndrome. they said i have Celiac Disease. will my gluten free diet eventually heal my Gut. or will it stay damaged forever? does the gluten pretty much destroy it? i mean if i get off the gluten, will my gut heal itself? will the damaged villi grow back? or will it stay damaged forever?

Answer
Hi, Chris. Following a gluten-free diet will stop the autoimmune response initiated by gluten. Once it has stopped, the gut will begin to heal. There is no set time it should take for villi to grow back; it may take 6 months, it may take years. There is also no guarantee how well the gut will heal: the billion may grow back perfectly fine or the may be weaker, shorter, thinner than healthy villi. It really depends on how much damage there was and how carefully you follow the diet.  A colonoscopy will show how well you have healed; your doctor will probably order regular colonoscopies in order to keep an eye on the situation. FYI: gluten hides everywhere.  It is used as an additive in things you wouldn't imagine contain wheat, such as toothpaste, vitamins, and some medications. I recommend getting a good guide to help you. Remember to focus on all the things you CAN eat and not what you can't and the diet will be much easier to follow.
