sugar

Question
I have always been a light and healthy eater, but could never lose the belly. I discovered when I do eat low carb/low glycemic I can lose weight-even if I eat the same total calories as normal carb.
My question:
1.Are some people more susceptible to sugar/carbs for weight gain and diabetes?
2. I JUST HAVE to eat dessert-even a cookie. Once or twice a week I go overboard with sweets. If I can train myself to not eat any sugar at all  will it help lose weight?
Its 4 o'clock no sugar or simple carbs all day-why am I getting light headed?
Also, I know a few skinny people that are big eaters but  dont care for sweets. Coincidance?
Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

Answer
Hi Barry,

Thank you for your question.  I want to apologize for getting back to you so late, I had to replace my computer.
To answer you first question, yes, there are people who are at a higher risk of having diabetes.  It can be heridatary and if you have belly fat, you most likely have insulin resistance.  Having extra pounds on your mid-section is the most dangerous place to carry extra fat.
There are many of us who fall into the desert trap, my husband has to have a sweet treat after dinner.  I try to have him eat a small bowl of cereal or fruit when I can convince him to do so.  I do think that you can train yourself to not eat sugar.  I have read many books on PH levels and sugar cravings, my favorite is The PH Miracle.  I have struggled with having a carbohydrate addiction myself and I have found that using some of the tips in the PH Miracle book helped me overcome some of my sugar cravings.
If you are trying a low carb diet and get light headed, you probably have low sugar by the afternoon.  Cinnamon pills or virgin coconut oil can help balance your sugar.  Low carb diets do help you lose weight because you are not eating  refined carbs and you are giving your digestion a rest.  I think the mistake people make going "low carb" is that they stay in the Phase 1 portion of the diet for too long.  Cutting out all carbohydrates can force your body into ketosis which over time can damage your kidneys.  If you choose to go on a low carb diet to jumpstart your weight loss, just make sure to slowly introduce healthy carbs such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains back into your diet after a week or so.
I think a lower carbohydrate diet can be beneficial as long as you eat all the food groups in moderation.
One of my close friends could eat huge quantities of food and never gained a pound.  I did observe that she she did not have a huge sweet tooth, but she may have been blessed with a wonderful metabolism because her mom was the same way.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and if you have any additional questions, please let me know.
Thanks!

Cheri

PS: I had to add this tonight, I thought of your question when I was at the store.  My father (a diabetic) wanted some desert so I made him a sugar free sundae using a low carb ice cream, sugar free strawberry topping and a touch of light whip cream.  I also make him sugar free root beer floats.  When I was answering your question about nightly sweets, I should have mentioned all of the great sugar-free options out there.  Of course it is a healthier habit to try and avoid all sweets, but if you do get a sweet tooth at night, a sugar free desert is a great option that won't ruin a low carb diet.
