QuestionI am 55. I tend to get a bit bloated after eating anything made with white flour. If it contains sugar then I also get nausea.
This led me to think I had gluten intolerance or celiac, but when I had my last medical I tested negative for this. I dont have the diarhea or the other major symptoms, just the bloating and discomfort.
I seem to be OK with whole wheat bread, bran flakes etc., so maybe its not gluten intolerance.
There is a family history of diabetes. I dont have it but could this be an indication I am susceptible?
Thanks
AnswerHi Connie,
Many people have a gluten sensitivity which can produce similar symptoms to celiac disease, but with no damage to the intestines like a celiac patient would have. If you can eat whole wheat products without symptoms you probably do not have a sensitivity, however, you can try eliminating all flour products for a week to see how your body responds.
Eating whole wheat bread and bran flakes are a great choice because the fiber helps to keep you regular and reduces bloating. Whole wheat and whole grain products are normally unrefined and contain less sugar than other products on the market. If you can, try to aim for 20 grams or more of fiber everyday. Most people do not have enough fiber in their diet.
I am concerned that you get nausea when eating sugar, you may have already tested for diabetes but if you have not, the next time you visit your Dr, you might want to make sure your sugar levels are normal.
If diabetes runs in your family, you are at a higher risk of getting the disease especially if you are overweight. The good news is, type 2 diabetes can often be controlled through diet and exercise.
I hope I answered all of your questions, please let me know if I can help with any recipes, diabetic or gluten free.
Have a great holiday!
