QuestionFor 7 months, I've had chronic digestive health issues. I've had almost every test they have, but nothing was found. I became vegetarian a year ago and the Dr. said it's possible I'm not getting the amino acids I need. I take a multivitamin and because I don't really cook, eat mostly pasta, soy, little dairy, some fruit and vegetables. Any feedback is appreciated re: the possibility of needing amino acids. Thanks
AnswerHi Lee!
It sounds like you're not consuming enough fresh, whole, live fruits and vegetables and those are the best sources of amino acids. For instance, vegetables like spinach as well as nuts, seeds and grains like quinoa are very rich plant-based sources of amino acids. So try cutting down on the pasta, soy and dairy, which are all processed, and eat more whole, natural, fresh fruits and vegetables. Processed foods rob you of nutrients and cooking food destroys many of the foods' nutrients. Thus, it is advisable that all vegans, as a general rule, eat more live (or raw, uncooked) foods and less cooked and processed foods. Often we, as vegans, get caught up in the cycle of consuming way too much processed and cooked food and not nearly enough vegetables, which results in various health issues. So to combat this, just start stocking up on the vegetables even if cooking isn't your thing. You can find fresh fruits and vegetables just about anywhere these days.
P.S. - If you want a REAL boost of amino acids look into sprouting some quinoa and then adding some to a green salad or try blending a couple tablespoons of flaxseed, handful of spinach, chopped fresh fruit of your choice, about 6 dates and some water for vitamin and nutrient-packed smoothie!!
