QuestionHi,
my father has lung cancer, and now seems to be in renal failure.
I am wanting to know if a low potassium diet would eliminate the kidney problems. his createnine and urea levels are exceptionally high, and he is permanently nauseous.
AnswerHi Shelly. Unfortunately, there are no dietary changes that can eliminate kidney problems. However, there are changes that can be made to help reduce burden on the kidneys. Those changes include restrictions on sodium (salt), potassium, protein (which his labs suggest would be beneficial), calcium, and caffeine. In many cases, the doctor may also suggest fluid restrictions. By reducing the workload on the kidneys, they may be able to heal (if reversible) or last longer (if not). The nausea could be a result of diet intolerance, the disease itself, or even a side effect of medication. If you have any further questions about renal (kidney) diet restrictions, please let me know.
