How to Prevent Acid Reflux and Heartburn

1. Eat smaller meals. Eating large meals can put pressure on your stomach and cause it to empty more slowly, leading to acid reflux. Instead, try eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.

2. Avoid certain foods. Some foods are more likely to cause acid reflux than others. These include:

* Spicy foods

* Fatty foods

* Fried foods

* Acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and tomatoes

* Chocolate

* Coffee

* Alcohol

* Carbonated drinks

3. Chew your food thoroughly. Chewing your food thoroughly can help to break it down into smaller pieces, making it easier for your stomach to digest and reducing the risk of acid reflux.

4. Avoid lying down after eating. When you lie down, the acid from your stomach can more easily travel up into your esophagus, causing acid reflux. Wait at least three hours after eating before lying down.

5. Elevate your head during sleep. If you are prone to acid reflux, try elevating your head during sleep. This can help to keep the acid in your stomach and away from your esophagus.

6. Take an over-the-counter antacid. If you are experiencing acid reflux, you can try taking an over-the-counter antacid to relieve symptoms. These medications work by neutralizing the acid in your stomach.

7. Talk to your doctor. If you have frequent or severe acid reflux, talk to your doctor. You may need to take prescription medication to manage your symptoms.
