Son with learning difficulty needs to lose!

Question
My son is 20 with autism and is 6'4 and weighs over 18stone. Because he is sometimes fussy about what he eats and won't eat veggies at all I have to modify as best I can what he eats, based around what he will eat! I could do with some guidelines as to how many calories/grams of fat etc etc I could aim for so he could lose his excess weight over a slow period of time. He's not very active as it's a difficult area for people with his problem. Any guidance would be appreciated
Thanks
Angela

Answer
Hi Angela,
This area is certainly NOT my expertise, but I can give you a few pointers.  First off, if you can eliminate sugar from his diet that would help a LOT. Sugar produces lots of insulin in our bodies very quickly and also quickly converts the empty un-needed calories into FAT. I don't really count calories or grams of fat.  That's just too tedious for me.  I just watch balance, and portion.  To eat a balanced diet is the best way, and to watch portion control.  Take a plate and devide it into four "pizza" slices.  Put a lean palm-sized portion of protein in one space such as broiled chicken spiced with lemon and garlic/parsley salt.  Put a whole grain/starch in one space about the size of a "cupped hand".  Put a veggie (I know you said this would be difficult but hopefully you can find one) the size of a cupped hand in one slot.  Finally in the last slot, put a cupped hand of a veggie OR a fruit.  One snack of maybe some nuts like pecans(that famous cupped hand size again) or an apple or orange or something like that between breakfast and lunch, and another snack of the same nature between lunch and dinner. No snacking after dinner and absolutely NO eating after 7pm.  Unfortunately, no "diet" will work.  You must modify eating habits for the rest of your life, AND you must get some exercise three to four times a week from 30-60 minutes each session.  If he likes to go for walks, perhaps you could walk around the block, or your yard with him.  If you could jump rope with him for even a few minutes to get his heart going that would be great too.  Get a punchbag and some gloves and see if he likes pounding that.  :)  That's GREAT exercise.  I hope I've helped somewhat but I feel limited to the information I can give with your specific limitations.  Good luck, Angela!
