Questioni went to this website, http://kirtland.cc.mi.us/~balbachl/calorie.htm , and it tells me that if im 175 lbs (im actually bigger than that), and i watch TV for 10 min, I burn 14 calories. Thats 84 calories an hour. Okay, lets say Im awake 17 hours. Does that mean if i watch TV ALL DAY, that I'll burn 1428 calories, which comes out to a caloric need of about 3438 (my BMR is 2010) per day? This seems impossible, or not? Someone please clear some things up for me, thanks.
Eric
AnswerEveryone's body burns calories at rest, which is what watching TV is! That is what Basal metabolic rate is. It takes calories for your body to function everday, such as digestion, breathing, etc... and that is a part of your total calorie needs for the day. What you burn beyond what your body needs at rest is added on to your BMR. What is added on is your activities of daily living such as your job and any additional exercise daily. Not sure how you calculated your BMR and total caloric needs? You need to include gender, age, height, weight, activity level. You may want to try the calculators on this site:
http://www.active.com/calculators/index.cfm
BMR that are calculated are only an ESTIMATE! And your total caloric needs that are estimated tell you approx. how many calories your body needs to maintain its present weight. This of course changes as your age and activity level changes.
AGAIN, burning calories while watching TV is just what your body burns at rest to function. You are not burning body fat or anything of that nature while sitting and watching TV.
