QuestionHI!
I am 45,in good shape and very active, but I have always had to 'eat like a bird' or I would baloon up.I am 20 or so pounds overweight, although I only consume around 1500 calories a day.
I have a friend, who is into alternate health therapies, that thinks I have a sluggish thyroid, possibly caused by a number of head and upper body x-rays I had taken as a child after a car accident. My doctor had a thyroid test done along with some recent blood work and it came back OK,but my friend says these are unreliable.Any thoughts?
AnswerI would say that thyroid tests are very reliable. Perhaps you have a slow metabolism, or maybe you are just eating the wrong foods. I suggest lots of fruits and veggies, eating whole grains and whole wheats (breads, pastas), buts and seeds, limiting your meat intake to 2-3 servings per week. Try to stay away from processed foods that contain white flour. As for exercise, a combination of cardio and weight lifting is the best. Eating 1500 calories a day isn't a big deal especially since it hasn't caused any weight loss or nutritional deficiencies. However, when you start eating more "natural" foods you will find that you feel like you are eating a lot more, but don't have to increase your caloric intake. For more on this type of diet you can look up Dr. Dean Ornish on the internet.
