QuestionHello, George!
I am interested in having healthy hair. A lot of the members of the hair forum I belong to are taking 400 to 500 mg. of silica a day and they say it makes their hair stronger. I just wanted to make sure there are no drawbacks to this before I try it. Thanks.
Loretta
AnswerHello Loretta!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Silica is an element required for the proper functioning of the enzyme prolyhydroxylase. This enzyme functions in the formation of collagen in bone, cartilage, and connective tissue, making it beneficial for healthy hair, skin and nails. The Food and Drug Administration has not set a recommended dosage of silica so I cannot tell you whether this is too high or too low. Usually, your body will use what it needs and the rest you will excrete out.
There is also another product called Juice Plus which contains the nutrients of 17 fruits and vegetables which can be beneficial for hair health also. I have had many patients who have reported they have noticed their hair looks healthier after using the product for a period of time. The website to purchase it from is http://www.juiceblend.com
