QuestionI just bought ground turkey from Costco as an alternative to ground beef. But I notice that it says it is 22%Cholesterol and 10% saturated fat. Is that still significantly better than beef? Or is there another reason to eat turkey instead of beef? thanks. Leighton Loo
AnswerLeighton,
The key with ground turkey is to make sure the lable states "lean" or "extra lean". OR that is states somewhere that the ground turkey is from ONLY white meat turkey or turkey breast. Otherwise it is probably just "ground turkey" which means they use the white meat, dark meat and skin in the product. That adds quite a bit of extra fat, saturated fat and cholesterol and can be pretty comparable to ground beef. Look for the key words and make sure the product is only coming from the white meat of the turkey, which is the leanest!! Ground beef can be extremely high in fat or pretty lean depending on the cut you purchase. Make sure to read the labels to compare packages to buy the leanest cuts.
Hope that helps!
