QuestionDo you know what it is about cheap cheese that causes me
digestive problems? The biggest problem is pizza. Places that
have "gourmet" or high quality pizzas and half of the frozen
pizzas you find in stores are no problem, but places like Pizza
hut, Domino's and Red Baron, *sheesh*! I eat a few slices and
I'm spending an hour or two in the bathroom later that night.
This isn't an important health question, I can easily avoid those
cheeses and get better quality, but I've been trying to find out
what the difference is between them and haven't found a thing.
The only constant factor is price. The cheeses that give me
explosive flatulance are all cheap (as is the pizza places that
strive to maximize their profits over taste and quality). Also
curious, this only started four or five years ago. Before that, I
could eat any pizza without problem (except taste, some of
those places were like eating soggy cardboard ;-) but then some
of the cheaper places started making me sick, and I noticed a
different kind of odor coming from the baked cheese. Did they
develop a process that made cheaper cheeses with some kind of
artificial ingrediant or something?
Also of note, I had the same problem with olestra and those
artifical fat chips. Ate one handful, spent a few hours in the
bathroom. Is this the same stuff that causing it?
AnswerHello Paul!
Thank you for your nutrition question. The artificial cheeses contain artificial flavorings such as MSG which can cause food sensitivites such as an upset stomach. The best thing is to look for the label which says "Real" cheese. Olestra is another artificial fat used to fry potato chips. It has been shown to cause diarrhea in many studies.
Hope this helps.
