QuestionHello,
I have not yet officially been diagnosed with diabetes, but a recent test showed high goucose levels (insulin levels were borderline normal), and my doctor wants to do further tests. I would like to know what dietary changes I can make, and I was hoping you could give me some advice, and also maybe direct me to some websites that explain nutrition as it relates to diabetes. I've seen a lot that have recipes, but would like to know more about which foods to avoid, which are good to eat, etc....
Thanks, Michelle
AnswerHello Michelle!
Thank you for your nutrition question. The best foods to eat in order to keep blood glucose levels at a healthy level would be foods such as almonds, peanuts, and cashews. They contain a special amino acid called L-arginine which helps to regular blood glucose. Try a handful of almonds everyday for a snack between meals.
Include more "whole" grains in your diet such as oatmeal, barley, and bran which release glucose into the blood very steadily.
Stay away from foods which cause blood glucose to spike such as sodas and fried foods.
Another way to keep blood glucose levels steady is to eat small frequent meals throughout your day rather then big meals. When we eat bigger meals it tends to go up. Try eating 4 mini meals rather then 3 big meals.
The American diabetes association has an excellent website that you might find helpful. http://www.diabetes.org
