QuestionHi Kimberly,
I'm 63, on diet of fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol. I understand the reason to curb on
fat, sugar and cholesterol, but don't know why
on salt. Could you kindly explain to me the reason
why we need to curb on salt, if it is true.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Howard
AnswerSodium can be a problem if you have high blood pressure and/or are sodium sensitive (sodium sensitivity can lead to high blood pressure). Since most of us do not know if we are sodium sensitive or not, even if you have normal blood pressure, it is advised to watch your sodium levels. If you have family genetics or other risk factors for high blood pressure they may have you on a lower sodium diet.
Too much sodium can also cause fluid retention, which can be a problem for some people. The body only needs so much sodium as with fat and cholesterol and we don't need to provide it with too much. Everything in moderation! In addition, high sodium foods often come hand-in-hand with higher fat foods such as chips and other snack foods, hot dogs, salami, fast food, etc...
Hope that helps you out.
