QuestionI am a 23 year old female, 5'6'' and 120lb. I have been researching nutrition topics on the internet for the past month or so. I came accross Northern Edge products for flax seed, wheat germ and wheat grass. I am already taking cod liver oil softgels and one a day womens multi vitamin. Can I do damage by taking to many extra products with my diet from the food pyrimid? What can I do to add benefit to a good diet and exercise? I am just confused by all the products that sound good but am not sure I should be taking. I would appreciate any advice you could give to help.
Thank You,
Shelley
AnswerShelley,
The only extra supplement you need is your multi/vitamin and probably a calcium supplement would be a good idea (always check with your doctor first!). As long as you are eating from ALL of the food groups daily you don't need all the extras! The flaxseed and others you mentioned ARE a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids but so is FISH. So eating fish 2-3 times a week is just as good as taking the supplements and much less expensive. Those type of supplements can be expensive so get your nutrients from food first. Fattier fish such as salmon, albacore, tuna and mackerel are higher in Omega 3 fatty acids. In addition to flaxseed and fish, nuts and soy are also good sources of Omega 3 fatty acids.
The key is to just eat a healthy and well-balanced diet and to use a multi vitamin and possibly calcium supplement as an insurance policy. They don't take the place of food just ensure you are getting all you need. If all of those extra products confuse you just don't worry about them. You can get what you need from food if you are careful about what you eat!
