QuestionHello! I was a little bit confused, also curious, about the difference between supplements and steriods. Obviously, steriods are some what unhealthy for you...but are supplements equally bad? Following the Arnold Schwarzenegger news, I found he doesn't think supplements are unhealthy. Is that true? What makes them better? Thanks!
AnswerSteroids, not prescribed by a physician are bad for you, especially if you are female. Taking steroids (testosterone based) may cause development of male characteristics such as increased muscle bulk, increased hair on parts of the body not normally seen in females, deeping of voice, mood swings, and a whole other host of problems. I am assuming that when you say supplements that you are taking about vitamin and mineral supplements, like your typical "one-a-day". These are not generally harmful unless you are taking them in excess. Some vitamins and minerals have what are called upper intake levels. Once you start consuming vitamins and minerals at doses about those levels you are at risk for developing symptoms of toxicity, which may or may not be reversible. For the general public, there is no harm in taking a daily vitamin/mineral supplement. But it's not necessary if your diet is already sufficient enough to provide you with adequate amounts of those essential vitamins and minerals. There are a few instances in which people should not consume these supplements, but if you are a healthy individual there should be no contraindication for you taking a daily supplement.
