Suppressed Metabolism

Question
I am a 5'8" female and I weigh 165 lbs.  Four years ago I lost 40 lbs by decreasing calories (12000-1300/day) and increasing exercise.  I was never able to get my caloric intake back above 1600-1700 calories (where it still is now), even though I know I burn at least 2000-2500 a day (my basal metabolic was measured 2 yrs ago to be 1600 cal/day), without gaining weight.  I changed my exercise habits and went from 4 to 6 days/week, still ate very well, and still gained all the weight back.  I now exercise 4-5x a week (cardio 5 days, strength 2 days) and I usually eat very well (follow FGP all the way - lots of fruits and veggies, lean meats, whole grains, etc.).  I just can't figure out how to increase my metabolism back up to where it should be without gaining weight.  My other goal is to lose about 20 lbs so I can more easily do the things I enjoy, such as trail running and hiking (I'm planning to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro in October).  My current body fat % is over 30%, which surprised me considering how much I exercise and how well I eat, (it used to be 19%).  I would definitely like to get this back down to 19-20% as well.  I am burning more than I'm eating, but my body is so used to eating fewer calories than it burns that my metabolism is suppressed so nothing is happening. I don't know what else to try to lose weight because all of the tried and true methods I'm already doing!  I have changed up my exercise so many times my body doesn't respond to that either.  I am at the end of my rapidly fraying rope!  Please help!

Answer
Charlene,
My suggestion would be to see a dietitian one-on-one.  I really can't figure out what is going on and help you the way you need help through a few paragraphs.  A dietitian can help you on an individual basis and really take a deep look at your overall lifestyle, which would be much more helpful for you.  It is impossible for me to say what is happening by just hearing a paragraph.
You can find a dietitian in your area by going to www.eatright.org.  If you really want to know what is going on and try to fix things I really recommend a dietitian!
Sorry I couldn't be more help but it is hard to answer questions like this when you don't really know someone and really know their history!  You really need someone who can sit down with you and figure out a plan and tweak that plan as you go along to see what will work for you.
