QuestionHi. I am a 16 year old athletic male. I would just like to know that the milk(regular or low fat which you will buy from the supermarket) is bad? My chemistry teacher told me today that some people believe that milk makes your bones grow wider instead of longer(because it contains some kind of hormone or something). She also said that organic milk is better than regular milk. Is this true?
I'm confused because I drink 3-4 cups of 1% lowfat milk everyday. Am I doing the right thing and should I switch to drinking organic milk?
AnswerHello Ahmed!
Thank you for your nutritoin question. This question is a big controversy. While milk is a good source of calcium it is actually not the best. Calcium is abundant in dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cooked dried beans, soy products, blackstrap molasses, almonds, sesame seeds, and fortified products such as cereals, rice milk, and orange juice. .
Calcium found in these and other plant foods is actually better absorbed than calcium in cow's milk.
In a battle over milk's place on the new food pyramid, you have the government (USDA--given the dual and often conflicting role of protecting the nation's health and promoting its agricultural products) and the dairy industry on one side, and various physicians, nutritionists, and researchers on the other.
There's an ongoing campaign to get every adult to drink three glasses of milk a day. That's obviously about increasing sales and profits.
