QuestionJust recently I have endured a new problem after my workouts; after running for more than 30 minutes I experience extreme nausea, stomach cramps, and dizziness. I have been a runner for about the past 4 years; however, just recently I have been experiencing these problems. They last for about an hour after finishing my workout. Is this due to my sugar levels? Or my sodium-potassium levels? PLEASE HELP!
AnswerHello Karri!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Feeling sick after a workout means you may have built up too much lactic acid, a byproduct of muscle metabolism, in your stomach.
One suggestion that I have is to make sure to "cool down" properly (keep moving for several minutes at low intensity such as slow jogging, walking, or marching in place) after a workout. This allows blood, rich in oxygen, to be distributed from the working muscles to the brain and other organs of the body, thus preventing blood from pooling in muscles that are no longer active. This phase prevents the dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps that can occur after a workout.
I would also recommend a supplement on my website called Juice Plus which can help reduce fatigue after exercise and minimizing tissue inflammation that occurs during exercise. For more information about ordering it go to http://www.juiceblend.com Since you are an athlete this would be excellent for you because it contains fresh fruits and vegetables. Let me know if you have more questions.
