QuestionDear Kimberly A. Tessmer--
I have been battling an eating disorder for the last decade or so and I wanted to get some specific advice about putting on weight. I do realize that there is a psychological aspect to anorexia which I'm working on with a counselor. Right now I just want specific tips for gaining weight. I'm 5 feet 9 inches tall and I weigh about 118 pounds. I want to gain weight and I'm wondering about calorie intake--how many calories do I need to be eating a day. How many pounds can I put on per week? What foods should I look to for high calorie content? And is it realistic to gain, say, 12 pounds over the summer in about 12 weeks? If not, what should my time frame be for shooting for 130 pounds? Thanks, Nia Henderson
AnswerNia,
You really need to see a dietitian one-on-one for proper instruction and personalized counseling. I can't tell you how many calories, etc... I can only give you general information and I don't feel that is what you need at this point.
Telling you how to gain weight is NOT something that can be done in a paragraph! You need to sit down with a nutrition professional like a dietitian that can go through everything with you step-by-step and give you the individual care and answers you are looking for. Without knowing anything about you I can't tell you how long it would take for you to gain weight. But seeing a dietitian on a regular basis can give you these answers.
I suggest checking out www.eatright.org and finding a dietitian in your area that you can work with.
