AnswerHi Angie,
In brief, humans are built to eat and thrive on food that grows on this planet. You have a built in program, your appetite and thirst that tell you what you need and when you have had enough for a while. 10,000 years ago we hunted and gathered. Civilization brought in the ability to store food, which gave us the chance to mix and match foods that don't occur naturally. In the last century we developed Shelf Life - what to add foods to make them last longer. All this happens with the assumption that our digestive system is just a big blender, throw anything down there and we will make it work. Not true.
We are in the habit of eating food that doesn't give us what we need nutrionally, so we stay hungry, keep on eating and get fat. We answer thirst with drinks that contain diuretics that leave us needing more water. We get at odds with our own bodies and the ways it tells us what it needs.
So you go on a diet, go from eating a lot and often to eating way less, and less often and go around hungry - at odds your own appetite. You get at odds with your own body, try harder and it gets harder. You get into thinking that eating in general is unhealthy, and everything makes you fat. Everything you have done tells you that this is the truth. It is difficult to change a belief system and its habits when it is so deeply ingrained.
What to do is eat what I call Real Food - food like fresh produce, whole grains - that contains what you need and in a way that you can digest and use it. (Just because a product had some vitamin or something added to it doesn't mean it is in a form that you can utilize.) Drink water when you are thirsty, even BEFORE you get thirsty. When you START to feel hungry, eat something that is good for you and your appetite can be you best pal, not your enemy.
