QuestionHello. My name is Mauricio and I just turned 18 years old this past June. My question has more to do with the physical aspect of post-weight loss. I lost about 40 lbs in a little under three months by mostly running a lot and significantly reducing calorie intake by more than 50%. Now, I noticed that after all the weight loss certain parts of my body are more toned and firmer. However, around my core area (abs/stomach), I noticed that I have an excess amount of skin. Not very much, as I can pretty much have a flat tummy when I stand up. However, when I sit down, this excess skin is more apparent. I was wondering if this loose skin will ever go away as I get older, since I AM only 17 years old and if there is any way to firm it and regain its firmness (elasticity)>?
AnswerMauricio, a significant weight loss like that, done in a drastic way, really isn't likely to stay off unless you make major lifestyle changes quickly. Believe me, I know from first hand experience (and I always - every time, thought "I'll keep it off!"). The thing is, no matter what you do, it will creep back up, probably with 20% more than what you lost to begin with (your 50 lb weight loss can turn into a 60 lb weight gain).
The exercise part is terrific, but if you've cut calorie intake too low, you've lost mostly water, possibly bone and even organ tissue!
The loose skin is to be expected with such a quick and dramatic loss. At your age though, it's more than likely to snap back within a few months, maybe a bit longer. Just keep working on muscle tone underneath. The number ONE exercise that works overall in the best way is swimming! You don't have to do laps or even get out of breath, as long as you're moving in the water, it'll work!
Please re-evalute your method of weight control and be really certain you haven't cut food intake in the wrong way. Are you getting whole grains (Oatmeal, shredded wheat or any number of other cereals)? Are you getting CARBS (they are NOT all bad), fruits, vegetables, FISH, beans/legumes? Are you having what you like(whether it's a chocolate bar or ice cream) ?
If you're following a "diet" or anything that doesn't include these basic necessities, you could be setting yourself up for trouble in the very near future. Approximately 99% of all dieters will regain their weight loss after going 'off' the diet (is that incredible?) and then pack on an additional 20% more weight and have a harder time taking it off.
