QuestionDear Reverend Abbott,
I am led to believe that a pale, straw coloured urine is an indicator of good health and on the whole my urine is light in colour.
However, I have noticed that when I take multi-vitamins my urine is a very strong yellow. Is this a bad sign, or simply a by-product of the supplement?

AnswerA sign of ideal health is a nearly colorless and odorless urine. Early in the day it's typically the strongest in both color and odor that it should get. As the day goes on, it should decrease in both - as we increase our fluid intake (whether from foods, liquids or both).
What we eat (and supplements we take) can effect this. Garlic for example, is just one of many things that alter the odor (so does asparagus). Eating beets or other deep colored food items can alter the color, as can taking vitamins. Try switching vitamins or skipping a couple of days to see if it changes. If not - and there's no food explaination, it might be prudent to check with your doctor for a routine CBC and UA (complete blood count and urinalysis).
It might be that you're simply not getting enough fluids (which can also be increased by eating fruits).
