QuestionHello Mr. Abbott,
Lately, especially since fall started, i have been watching myself eat and eat uncontrollably. In the past month I may have gained 5 pounds. Usually I am sensitive about eating, and usually I can motivate myself not to eat too much in order to stay in shape and look good. However, for the past month I have been going out to eat every weekend, and during the week I find myself eating a lot at home or at school. Also, I recently cancelled my gym membership, and so I do not have access to the machines anymore.
I can't find any motivation to stop eating. Everyday I tell myself, tomorrow is a new day, i'll start fresh, but I cave in when it's time for action.
Could you suggest any tips for me? I would love to read any helpful articles online. What is my problem, what is wrong with me?
Thank so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Elisa N.
AnswerWhat do you feel passionate about? When you were 11 years old, what did you want to be? Have you become it? Why not? Or, is it enough?
Re-evaluate who you've become and what you really want to be. Then, just BE the best person you are.
Do you care about the environment? What are you doing about it? Animals? What have you done to make a difference this week? Last week? You love kids? Care about the plight of the elderly or handicapped? Do you complain about politics and think this is enough?
You don't need an article online, you need to find a volunteer group for the thing you're passionate about. You need to DO something that's not typical for you, do something new, something different. Help deliver meals to the elderly or disabled in your area. Look into their faces, discover who they are, what they were behind that mask of wrinkles and I assure you, every single one of them will have a fascinating story they will love to tell.
There's hundreds of animals needing attention, feeding, cleaning and just plain someone to care at your local shelter or preserve. You COULD end up learning how to handle a magnificent hawk, giant owl or even snakes!
How about your local museum? Bet they need a docent!!!
Local schools often need people too.
Today is your new day Elisa. Today is yesterday's 'tomorrow', so the timer has rung, the sands have run out.
AT my site I have a volunteer search that should include needs within blocks of where you live. The very hardest part of this is DOING it the first time. Once you start, it's not hard to keep going - and the people you'll meet, the richness you'll add to your life and the things you'll learn, even about yourself, will surprise you.
If you don't do it, look in the mirror and ask that 11 year old inside what she's so afraid of.
