Selenium levels.

Question
Hi there, I believe the RDA for Selenium intake is 40 mcg, a multi-vitamin I am taking is at 150 mcg.  Understanding that that is already quite a bit, I am somewhat concerned that my natural intake of it may push it over the edge?

The multivitamin I am taking is called "Perfect Multi Super Greens" by a company called Purity Products.  It consists of 5 pills taken daily.

Any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Dan,

The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs)are the most recent nutrient recommendations. The DRI for selenium for males age 19 and older is 55 mcg. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for selenium is 400 mcg (the Tolerable Upper Intake Level is the maximum level of daily nutrient intake that is likely to have no risk of adverse effects - this includes intake from food, water and supplements). So the amount you are currently taking is likely to be safe unless your dietary intake is unusually high.

If you are eating a reasonably well balanced diet and have no medical problems, you may want to consider choosing a less expensive multivitamin - a simple, complete multivitamin/mineral supplement like Centrum Forte or your drugstore's store brand equivalent is adequate to meet your needs. Spend the money you save on high quality foods instead!

Hope that helps!
