QuestionHi I have lots of questions. First, some background on me. I'm 26 years old, 5'4" and about 106-108 lbs when not pregnant. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant and weigh about 117 lbs. At 18 I was healthiest, very active, lifted weights, lots of cardio (distance running, albeit slowly), and weighed about 120-125 lbs. During my 2nd yr of college, I was less active and also began eating extremely low fat. This was not intentional, I was not trying to lose weight, just eat inexpensive food that I thought was adequate/ healthy. So I was eating lots of beans/ peas/ lentils, some vegetables- lots of salad greens, tomatoes, and potatoes, some milk and fruit juice. I also started drinking coffee daily. My weight got down to about 106 during that time. I ate this way for about a year or year and a half, then got married at 21 and went back to eating the way I had in the past, but my activity level never went back to what it was in high school :( Anyway.... sorry if this is too long.... I became pg and had no problem gaining weight during my pregnancy, and gave birth to a 8lb 2 oz baby. I had my 2nd child 23 mos later, gained adequate weight, 7 lb 12 oz baby, but had some trouble with low amniotic fluid during the last 6 weeks of my pg. One Dr. thought this was due to my low pre-pregnancy weight/ not having enough fat stores to cover me if I didn't eat basically constantly. I had been under some stress at that time and had some late meals/ low blood sugar trouble (I think I'm hypoglycemic, and it seems to worsen during pg). After the births of my children, I breastfed and got back down to about 108 lbs within 2 months post partum (other women hate me of course, but I would like to keep some of that weight!) I certainly do not have an eating disorder, I try to eat as much as I can, but I still can't gain/ keep on weight when I'm not pg. Can hypoglycemia lead to underweight? or vice versa? My hypoglycemia symptoms are: Need to eat quite frequently, hunger comes on suddenly and sharply - I NEED TO EAT NOW! Sometimes wanting quick sugar, but usually needing meat or dairy. I get EXTREMELY grouchy when this happens (daily if I am not home with an immediate source of the food I crave, be it sugar or meat or dairy).... So is there an eating plan you can recommend for me? Why have I been unable to gain weight when not pregnant/ stay above 115 lbs after pregnancy, when I am eating past full and eating frequently, and eating high calorie foods? How can I control my hypoglycemia?
Thank you, hope you can help.
AnswerFirst of all unless you have been clinically diagnosed with hypoglycemia, I wouldn't assume that is the problem!! Secondly, if you are pregnant and having these symtoms you really need to talk to your doctor about this!! I cannot give you personlized dietary advice without actually working with you and knowing more about you. In addition, this is a service that dietitians charge for.
My advice is to first speak with your doctor about your symptoms and then to ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian. You need to first be diagnosed and then you need to work with someone one-on-one that can help you control your symptoms through diet. It takes much more than I can give you in a few paragraphs. Again, I would only be able to give you general info and not personalized services, which is really what you need and seem to be asking for. I can't tell you why you can't gain weight or why you have these symptoms. You need someone to work with you and help you to figure it out.
