QuestionOn holidays and such, where people overindulge to the point that they grossly exceed the 3,600 calorie cutoff to add a couple of pounds, how long does it take for the fat cells of the body to register the new addition, and consequentially for the gain to show up in the mirror or on the scale? Someone told me it takes three days after a day of bingeing for the effects to appear on the body - is this an urban myth? Thank you for your time.
AnswerMyth-Myth-Myth! That people gain 5 to 10 lbs over the holidays is a pure exaggeration. Want to know what the real truth is? A weight gain of 0 to 2 lbs. And that is generally nothing more than 'water' weight because of the increased salty foods and fluids.
When the body takes in 3,500 more calories than it uses or needs, 1 lb of fat is stored, pretty much right away. The thing is, most people don't really show a 1 lb weight gain. By the time anyone really notices, there's usually a few lbs to deal with.
If you see a gain on the body in just a few days, it's probably bloat (fluids). By cutting back on salty (processed, canned, fast foods) items and INCREASING fluid intake (ideally water or tea), you can flush out the excess in about as long as it took to get there (3 to 5 days).
Binge eating for a day is NOT likely to add any weight as long as the person is eating reasonably before and after that binge.
