AnswerWeight gainers are just calories. You can do it yourself, probably a lot more efficiently and cost-effectively with 'shakes' made with low fat milk or soy products, a banana, a couple tablespoons of peanut butter and blend.
There are two kinds of weight to have (aside from your water, organ and bone): Fat and muscle. FAT is probably not the way you want to go in weight gain. It's heart clogging, lung impairing and life shortening. While some fat layers are good for us and necessary, don't think that weight gain by eating sugar, candy and fatty foods is the way to go.
Muscle weighs more than fat tissue and takes up less space. It would be EASIER for a man to gain weight by developing muscle. You don't have to 'lift' like you may think, you can develop muscle with swimming, hiking, even just regular walking (brisk rate, carry a couple 1 to 3 lb weights in your hands and punch as you go).
While you increase your 'good' food intake and activity, you should see a difference relatively quickly.
Now, of course I'm going to tell you to STOP smoking. Not only can it screw with your metabolism, but I've buried THREE immediate family members who were going to 'quit someday' and it's not an easy way to go. It's the most horrible thing ever! Watching them made it a no-brainer for me and I quit cold turkey.
Anyway - by altering your lifestyle and habits, you may not gain 20-30 lbs, but you'll find yourself different enough to probably appreciate it.
Eating frequently, healthy - not fast food, a couple times a day. When you do activities, INCREASE the food intake
Take a look at my site for healthy choices in eating (it may look like it's all 'lose weight' stuff, but it's not. If people eat this way and NEED to lose, they will. If they need to gain, they will (just add more servings).
