QuestionA few months ago I was diagnosed with severe anemia (hemoglobin at 5.5). Within a few weeks I was able to get it under control (hemoglobin at 12.4), but I am slipping again. Thought this may be due to the type of supplement I have settled on. Iron Chelazome (chelated iron) is the only supplement that did not make stomache ache.
What is the differece between Ferrous Sulfate, Carbonyl Iron, Iron Chelazome?
Also do know of any anemia specialists in the Detroit Metro area?
AnswerHello Katie!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Carbonyl iron (Feosol庐) has a slower release of iron and is more expensive than ferrous sulfate. Slower release preparations may be safer in children and cause less gastrointestinal side effects. 45mg and 60mg carbonyl iron tablets are available. Iron Chelazome is chelated with amino acids making it more absorbable, bioavailable and less likely to cause gastric upset. This may be why it does not upset your stomach.
For anemia specialists I would call Henry Ford Health care at Consultation Line 1 800-888-4340
