sunflower seeds

Question
Good morning,

Is a sunflower seed considered a nut?
What is the difference?

Thank You
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

No, sunflower seeds are not considered nuts. A nut is defined as a "hard-shelled, one seeded fruit" and therefore, a true nut grows on a tree (such as walnuts or almonds). By contrast, many sunflower seeds are found within one sunflower. Peanuts, although they are referred to as nuts, are actually a legume (they grow in the ground rather than on a tree). Most people with tree nut or peanut allergies are not allergic to seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds and can safely consume them.

Hope that helps!
