QuestionMy name is Grace, I am 15 years old. I developed bulimia at age 13, it slowed my growth to an inch per year, I had never had my period and never got it. I am recovering now, but I am still much shorter than everyone in my family. In order to reach my mid parent height I have to grow two more inches. Is this possible? Also, I lost and then gained weight with bulimia and when I stopped I lost weight even though I am trying to gain so that I can get a period and grow. What are some nutrients I should make sure to get enough of? (also, I used to hate salt and now I want it on everything, what could that mean?)
AnswerDear Grace, These are good questions to ask your doctor. I have heard of gymnasts still growing into their twenties, after they had stopped competing, but I don't know the details. You need calories in general to grow, especially calories from healthy fats and proteins. You probably should eat 2500 or more per day to grow depending on your present height. A dietician can figure out a plan for you if you ask your doctor for a consult with one.
Fats and protein are essential in the diet. High fiber carbohydrates are important too, but not as important as the fat and protein. A multivitamin with minerals taken daily will also help prevent deficiency. The salt thing, I'm not sure about. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
