QuestionHi Kimberly,
I was recently tested and my cholesterol is too high, 283. I抦 not eating anything with saturated or trans fat. I抦 really suffering when it comes to my coffee. I抦 used to using light cream. I can抰 find a good replacement for light cream. I抳e tried non-fat half & half, non-dairy coffee creamer, and Coffee Mate. Would you have any other recommendations that I could try?
Thanks,
Randy
AnswerHi Randy,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but had to do a little asking before I could answer your question. Since many of the substitutions I would recommend are ones you have already tried and were not happy with I went out and asked a few other dietitians to see if they had ideas!
Some ideas I found for you are:
low-fat soy milk (it is a bit creamer than regular milk)
evaporated skim milk (has a creamy texture)
Maybe one of those ideas will work. If you are only using a very small amount in your coffee and only drink maybe one cup a day I wouldn't worry too, too much! There are probably other changes in your diet and lifestyle that will make much more of an impact! I definitely recommend seeing a dietitian in person to help you make the changes you need! If you haven't already, I would suggest asking your doctor for a referral or checking out www.eatright.org to find a dietitian in your area. Lifestyle and diet can make a huge impact on your cholesterol levels and you definitely want to try all you can before taking medications! You could learn everything you need in probably just a few sessions!
Good luck,
Kim Tessmer, RD LD
