QuestionI currently have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and have been working in the social work field for the past 6 years. I am unhappy with my career field and am very interested in going back to school and pursuing a career change in Nutrition. I am fanatic about health, food, and fitness. My question is, how can I break into the nutrition industry before I have attained a degree in Nutrition? I think that it would be beneficial for me to work in the industry while going to school so that I have experience before obtaining a degree.
AnswerHello Jessica!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Nutrition is a very exciting and interesting field. I would recommend working or volunteering at your local hospital dietary department and speaking with the dietitians about pursuing a career in nutrition. You can get a better idea about what a dietitian does on a daily basis.
I believe that your degree in Psychology would fit perfectly with a degree in nutrition. People who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia could benefit greatly from your expertise. In addition, people who are emotional eaters could also receive much needed help from you. Many people eat out of boredom which is an emotion.
I also recommend that you check out my book called "Ask the Nutritionists: Answers to your Nutrition Questions", it contains many of the questions you will be receiving from people on a daily basis.
Let me know if you have more questions.
