QuestionHello,
I will soon be on a tight (student's) budget. I was wondering what foods are very
cheap but healthy? I will need at least some things with ample amounts of
calories, as I have very fast metabolism and a likelihood for being underweight.
Any suggestions for a balanced diet would be appreciated.
AnswerHello Margaret!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Here are some examples of some inexpensive ways to eat healthy.
* A cup of rice and a vegetarian stir-fry
* Replace soda with water
* Pasta primavera( pasta topped with veggies)
* Fruitshakes/smoothies
* Cheese and crackers
* Nuts-almonds, walnuts, cashews
* Beans (flavored with a little meat)
* Fruits and vegetables
Learning to eat (and prepare) more meals at home is an excellent way to reduce your food budget and eat healthfully. Find a source of recipes that you trust and learn to prepare them. I would recommend checking out my book "Ask the Nutritionists: Answers to your Nutrition Questions" which contains excellent healthy and inexpensive recipes. The book is available at any bookstore for 12.95,
If you抮e looking for healthy food on a small budget, then fruits and vegetables and other whole foods are the way to go. They抮e the basic building blocks of a nutritious diet, and they抮e much cheaper than processed foods.
