tired feeling

Question
Dear Ms. Kraemer,

I am an 18 year old college student...I feel tired all the time. It is not because I don't get enough rest, because I sleep 7-8 hours a night, and have a hour nap most days. People around me are sleeping less hours- and functioning even better. I am constantly on the verge of falling asleep..and can be asleep at night in as little as one minute. What I am wondering is if there is anything I can add to my diet in order to be less tired?
Thanks. Alyssa

Answer
Dear Alyssa, There are many reasons for feeling tired. Go to your college health center and see if they can check you out, you might be anemic. If you are not anemic, you might be experiencing hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. This is usually caused by the foods you choose. If you think it's diet related, then stop eating foods with sugar or starchy carbohydrates in them and start eating foods that are higher in protein like eggs, meat, fish, chicken, cheese, etc. Smaller more frequent meals will also help your blood sugar remain constant provided you choose higher protein foods. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
