Beer, red wine and moderate alcohol consumption to improve health

Question
Hello,

I had a question of sorts relating to the pros and cons of beer and wine. I like to indulge in light beer often, but am exploring wine lately. I am a 36 yr old male, 5'11" and weigh 234 lbs. I also take blood pressure meds and cholesterol meds(lisinopril hctz + lipitor). Is it better to drink wine(white or red) than beer? and why?
Thank you.

Answer
The health benefits of any alcohol:

Harvard researchers included moderate alcohol consumption (5 oz dry wine or 12 oz beer) in their list of the best ways to reduce heart disease risk.

Red wine pros:

1. The cardio-protective effect has been attributed to antioxidants found in the skin and seeds of red grapes.

2. Antioxidant resveratrol in the skin of red grapes can fight some cancers, Alzheimer Parkinson.

Note that non alcoholic red wine contains the same antioxidants as red wine but without alcohol, its protective effects are somewhat weaker.

Beer pros:

1. Researchers at Okayama University offered purchased beer minus alcohol to lab animals and found that their vulnerability to substances causing certain cancers greatly reduced.

2. Tufts experts claim that beer protects bone mineral density.

3. Dark beer contains antioxidants xanthohumol with potent estrogenic properties making it a potential natural hormone replacement natural drug for post-menopausal women, without the side effects of currently available HRT drugs.
