QuestionHi. We were just blessed with a baby girl that was born at 34 weeks. She was only kept in the hospital (Korean) for 5 days and then they told us to bring her home (we are Americans working for the US Goverment in Korea). Her weight is 2kg. They said to try and feed her 40cc every three hours, but our baby does not take that much. Does this mean our baby will not gain weight? We are alternating her feedings with breast milk via a bottle and preemia formula (the one with extra calories). What is the minimum amount she needs each feeding to gain weight or in a day?
Your response would be such a great help from so far away from home.
Thank you!
Regards,
Roland
AnswerHi Roland, Speaking as a pediatric nurse, 40 cc every three hours is what you should feed her for now, because that's what they told you to feed her. You have to get frequent weight checks to make sure she is gaining weight, and as long as she is having 6-8 wet diapers per day, she probably is getting enough food. If she is lethargic and won't drink, you need to contact her doctor. It's hard to tell if she's not gaining weight just by looking at her, you really need to have her weighed. Regarding the minimum she needs to drink, there is no exact number because every infant's metabolism is different, only averages. Hope that helps, and congratulations on your new little one.Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
