renal disease and high protein diet

Question
Is a high protein diet safe for a person with mild renal disease?

Answer
Hi Tony
No, any form of renal disease means that you should be diligent about how much protein you consume.    Protein breaks down into urea and puts alot of strain on the kidneys if you are a normal person who eats a high protein diet.   This is why it's important to exercise regularly and drink a lot of water when on a high protein diet, because it will prevent excess urea from passing throug the kidneys (the protein will go towards building and repairing muscle tissue and organs rather than just being excreted through the kidneys).
If you have mild renal impairment, you need to focus not only on reducing your protein intake, but watch your blood sugar level & blood pressure.   You need to reduce your sodium intake to less than 1700mg /day, maintain or lose weight and keep a healthy weight, stop smoking, little to no alcohol, etc.
