The Book, Skinny Bitch

Question
Hi. I'm a 46 year old mom with a 16 year old son. I'm reading a book that is totally changing my life nutrition-wise and I wanted to know if it's OK!

This book is a NY Times Best Seller on all the bad things we eat-I'm sure you've heard of it. I have become convinced that meat is a very bad thing even though I've been loving it all my life. We have had no meat for a week now. I feel mostly really good about changes and heading to a vegitarian lifestyle and I'm enjoying cooking it too.

But some of the stuff in the book have me worried for out health....
- Is there really a ton of persticides and growth hormones in meat?
- Can we be healthy people without milk?
- What about calcium?

Any advice is appreciated.
Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa,

I have heard of but not read this book, yet. There are so many to read... This subject is one that fills me with passion for good nutrition!

Yes, there are many pesticides and hormones in meat. Also there are very often antibiotics as well. All these additives can have a profound effect on your health! You can buy free range meat (if you must have meat) of animals that graze on organic, naturally grown or wild fields like they did many decades ago before meat mass production. Free range meats are generally going to be free of these 'additives' and chemicals. It is considerably more expensive.

Humans do NOT need cow's milk. European/Western nations and cultures are among the fewest which drink milk after infancy. Those that do not still use milk for cooking and cheese or yogurt production but then in small amounts compared to the average Americans consumption. Milk is acid and mucus forming, has the same issue with hormones and antibiotics, and really offers little absorbable calcium. There are many good calcium sources including broccoli, kale, kelp, almonds, collards, oranges, flax seeds, figs, molasses, watercress, raisins, apricots, soy beans, and chick peas.

I do a health presentation about calcium and an example I use is the elephant, a giant animal with a massive bone structure and NO MILK in it's diet. My family is also a living example, we don't drink it and my son is a healthy growing boy, solid. We also only eat fish two to three times a month, no other meat (we did 5 years with no meat). The diet we have been told is right for us all of our lives is a myth generated around money, too much protein for starters, got milk? and all the rest... believe it.

If you would like more info or the presentation about calcium please contact mw through my web-site. www.marketamerica.com/alkalinenutrtion (contact me at bottom of page).

Thank you for the question,
Dan Haley, CNC
