whey protein for increasing muscle mass?

Question
Hi, I'm 29 years old male from Macedonia, Europe. I'm 174 cm, 63 kg. I go to gym 3 times a week, 10-12 min. do cardio (on stationary bicycle)and I do weight training. I'm beginer, only 2 weeks ago I started my training. I want to increase my muscle mass, so I started to take whey protein: ISO sensation 93 by Ultimate nutrition (in my country only this firm's products are available). Can you, please, tell me if this product (and proteins shakes at all) can help me to increase my muscle mass?

Answer
Hi Sase,

Whey protein is very good for you, not just to support muscle, but also to support your immune system as well. I will check the brand and let you know as much as I can find out.

Though protein is important for your health it is not necessary to eat huge amounts to gain muscle mass. It is more important to clean up your diet and eliminate or greatly reduce sugary foods and beverages such as baked goods, soft drinks, alcohol, ice cream and white flour products. Also avoid high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.

Focus on vegetables, fruits, lean protein like fish or poultry, healthy fat foods (walnuts, salmon, milled flax seed), and some fat-free dairy or dairy alternatives (soy, almond milk, rice milk...).

Your weight training along with a healthy diet will increase your lean mass. Right now you are in the 'light' exercise category; look to eat about 2300 calories daily. Once you begin increasing your frequency and work-out load you may need to increase calories somewhat.

Good luck and look for a follow-up about your whey protein brand.

Hi Sase,

I looked up the Ultimate Nutrition ISO sensation 93 product. It seems to be a quality product. It is designed to help your muscles recover after a workout. Remember, to increase muscle mass- exercise, weight training, eat right (and enough).

Thank you again,
Dan Haley, CNC
