Eating After Late Shifts

Question
Hi there,

I'm a broadcast journalist working for a 24 hour news channel which means doing shifts at all hours!

I am also hypoglycemic and cut all sugary food out of my diet more than ten years ago while receiving treatment from a nutritionist.

My query is this...
When i am working late shifts, I finish work at about midnight and get home at 12:30 at which point I cook myself a protein/vegetable meal. eg.. a large chicken breast and green beans (a whole bag of them - i love veg!).

However, i have been told by so many people that this is bad for me and that i should not be eating so late. I don't find it to difficult to sleep afterwards, but i do wake up every couple of hours needing the loo. I think it's something to do with the water content of the green beans.
What do you suggest i eat instead at such a late hour?

Gemma x

Details that may be helpful: my job is sedentary (at a computer), i am 24 years old, and trying to keep my weight down.

Answer
Hi Gemma,

I do not recommend eating after 630-700 P.M. I also understand your dilemma, I used to worked many late night and overnight shifts in the past.

You would be better served to bring along a pre-cooked meal to eat during a break in the early evening. When you eat late your body does not produce human growth hormone as it should. HGH ,as you may know, is important in cellular maintenance (do not supplement with HGH!, eat well and exercise, sleep well). You may fall asleep o.k. however you may also wake up more often because you are not sleeping well due to digestive activities.

On the other hand... if someone was to eat a late meal; protein and vegetables is the right choice.

As a sedentary worker you can combat by walking as often as possible during your work day and definitely exercise at least 3 to 4 times weekly for 30 minutes. Walking, treadmill, running, hiking, weight lifting, yoga, swimming... mix it up.

Thank you,
Dan Haley, CNC
