QuestionI have a friend who gets ill when ever she eats meat of any kind. She says that at first she feels high, for about half an hour, then gets ill and vomits.
the only abnormal part of her is her kidneys, one is smaller than the other. but in my research, I haven't found that kidneys do anything for protein.
I am big into nutrition and have never heard of anything like this, can you help out?
AnswerHi Matteus,
Unfortunately I do not know what may be causing your friends reaction to meat. There are often additives in prepared meats which some people have allergic reactions to.
Also there is a serious disorder called phenylketonuria where the person can not metabolize phenylalanine. This is screened for at infancy and the symptoms are not as you described.
Protein can effect the kidneys. Usually those with kidney disorders or other diseases that effect the kidneys are told to pay particular attention to protein intake.
My suggestion would be to first consult her doctor. To discover food allergies an elimination diet is also helpful.
I am sorry I can not be of more assistance.
Enjoy your holidays,
