QuestionA nutritionist informed me today that milk (regardless of whether it is 1%, 2% or fat free) is actually bad for you because it contains a lot of sugars. I drink a lot of milk for its proteins and calcium because I work out regularly and was astonished to learn this.
Strangely enough, I looked at the nutrition label and did notice that the 2% milk I drink contains 12g of sugar (who would've thought).
So my question is, is milk really that bad for you? Should I reduce my milk consumption (I currently drink 2-3 glasses every day)? Do the protein and calcium benefits far outweigh the sugar contents?
So my question is,
AnswerHi AP,
No offense but you may want to find a new nutritionist. There's hardly many things that are "bad" for you. That being said, yes, there is sugar in milk in the form of lactose which isn't as rapidly absorbed as other sugars such as glucose. Along with the protein that slows digestion, the sugar has even less impact.
I would actually be more concerned (still not a huge deal) with the fact that it's 2% milk. The 2% is quite tricky, as whole milk is only 4%. When doing the math, 2% milk actually gets 37% of its calories from fat, which means it's a high fat drink.
However, as long as you're not trying to lose weight, I don't see a problem at all with you drinking your 2% everyday.
Hope that helps some.
