Should I try to gain weight?

Question
According to the popular BMI calculators, I am underweight. I am a female, 5'7" and I weight about 111 lbs. I was an athlete in college and this is my first year out of college. I used to work out and run almost everyday, still I weighed no more than 117 lbs. I have found that since I have come to graduate school and do not have time for daily exercise, I have actually lost weight. I eat a very healthy diet and do not overinduldge in foods. But, I am beginning to wonder if I don't eat enough or if I could be at an unhealthy weight? What are some of the risks of being underweight? What are some steps to take to become healthier? My hands and feet are always cold, I have never had a regular menstrual cycle, and I am often fatigued. Is this a serious problem? I am just looking for some advice on where I should go from here. I want to be healthy (if I am not already).  Thanks :)

Answer
Hi KG,
I would talk to your doctor to see if he/she thinks your weight has caused your irregular menstrual cycles. If they stop all together then that is a sign that your weight is definitely too low, which could lead to weakened bones and osteoporosis.
I would be sure to eat every 3 hrs of a meal that contains a lean protein and either fruit or veggie. Also, be sure to include some foods that contain healthy fats, as this will help regulate your hormonal system. Healthy fats are found in wild salmon, tuna, milled flax seed, olive oil, nuts (walnuts especially), etc.
