QuestionHi, I'm a 20 year old female, about 5'5, and I weigh usually between 135-140 pounds. I'm a big exerciser.. I love to run.. but lately I've been wanting to lose some weight so I've upped my running to no less than 5 miles a day plus weight lifting. I'm also an athlete in college (basketball), so I do that everyday as well. I eat fairly well. My daily food intake is somewhere around 1000-1300 calories and I usually stick to chicken, tuna, fruits, cereal, and I drink only water. I avoid all candy, chocolate, ice cream, fried foods, etc. However, with all of this, I seem to have a problem losing weight. I've been doing this consistently for about 2 months and haven't lost but maybe 2 or 3 pounds. I have suffered from anorexia in the past... it was about 3 years ago and have relapsed a few times... so I'm wondering if maybe that has something to do with me not losing weight? I'm trying to be healthy in my weight loss, but it's definitely not working out for me. I'm tempted to take diet pills, but I am scared of gaining the weight immediately back when I'm done taking them. Any suggestions?
Answer Your biggest enemy here is the scale. Put a 5 lb weight on it. It weighs 5 lbs right? Now try to put 5 lbs of feathers on it (try a pillow or two). This also weighs 5 lbs.
There's a HUGE difference in the mass though isn't there?
You are most likely exchanging a smaller body mass for the previously bigger one and the scale doesn't know the difference.
You may have lost 5 lbs in fat, but at the same time developed 5 lbs in muscle.
Get rid of the scale. It does nothing but lie anyway.
Use a tape measure or your clothes to gauge how you're doing.
Also, by dumping the scale you're freeing yourself from being measured by a number. Having been where you are, I can promise you it's remarkably freeing!!! It's a little difficult at first, but after a while you'll never want to step on one again. I even 'refuse to weigh' at doctor's visits. They can't make me!
