  I was reading the label on a jar of peanut butter, and it said that it contained hydrogenated vegetable oil but zero trans fat.
   I thought hydrogenated vegetable oil was trans fat.
please explain.

Hi Bob,

This a great question. The USDA label requirements state that a manufacturer only has to declare the amount of trans fat when it is over 1/2 gram per serving. The problem with this is that people regularly eat products containing trans fat, with out realizing it! Some experts believe anything over 3-4 grams a day can be harmful and it is easily believable that many people get that and more on a daily basis.

This is why I advocate the complete avoidance of hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Read all labels, it hides in the most unsuspecting places.
